IS IT A SIN TO SMOKE OR DRINK?

smoke

I have been asked this question several times by individuals who smoke and drink if they too can be saved by accepting Jesus Christ as their personal saviour. Some persons even say that since they are smoking and drinking, there is no need to go to church because they are already sinners and they are already condemned. Nobody is condemned because they smoke and drink.  What is important is for you to be willing to go to church and fellowship with other Christians and hear the word of God. Nowhere is it mentioned in the bible that smoking or drinking is against the word of God. Nevertheless, for our health and in other to be in good health and physical fitness, we have to present our bodies as a living sacrifice to God. We therefore have to consume alcohol substances in moderation and even better abstain totally from them.

I often hear about the occasion Jesus converted water to wine to convince people that since Jesus could convert water to wine then he was not against people drinking beer. I however find this gross because by giving in to the temptation to drink, we can engage in revelling and other forms of rejoicing that are not appropriate for a Christian. The bible warns in the book of 1 Peter 5:8 that “we should be sober, be vigilant because the devil, like a roaring, roams about, looking for whom to devour.” We should therefore be careful in order not to fall into excesses and thus not be able to pray effectively. Drinking in moderation may work for a while however the temptation of taking a few more bottles in excess is very easy. It is therefore better to abstain from drinking and smoking. Maybe, some people would not agree with me but this is what I think on this matter.  Write your comments below.
